General information about Binh Thuy Ancient House
Binh Thuy ancient house is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Can Tho. It is about 6 km from the city center. The house built in 1870 has belonged to the Duong family, a respectable merchant family. The Duong family settled down in the South in the 18th century and has had six generations. The third descendant – Mr. Duong Van Vi, chose Binh Thuy to build the ancestor’s house.
Besides, the family is keen on collecting many precious antiques; thus, the architectural style and interior design are exquisite and unique. Although the architecture strictly follows the Feng Shui regulations in the East, the 100–year–old house is a harmonious construction between East and modern Western architecture.

The architecture of Binh Thuy Ancient House
When visitors first come to the house, they will see a large iron and concrete fence reflecting Western culture. After entering the main gate, visitors will cross an auxiliary entrance with a unique Eastern style. It includes 4 round pillars, two wooden pillars, and two concrete pillars.
Besides, the house is attractive for wooden crossbeams and the tiled roof. The top of the roof is delicately carved with floral, plant, unicorn, fish prints. There is a signboard “Phuoc An Hieu” in Chinese and “Phu tho ho Duong” which means a place to worship the ancestors of the Duong family.
The front house was divided into five compartments which broke the traditional three-compartment house design in the South of Vietnam. Especially, all the marble tiles on the floor are imported from France. According to the locals, before tiling the floor, the Duong family used a salt lining to make the house more ventilate.
Binh Thuy Orchid Garden and Antiques
Besides having unique architecture, Binh Thuy ancient house is surrounded by a vivid orchid garden and invaluable antiques.
Mr. Duong Van Ngon – the descendant of the 5th generation of the Duong family interests in bonsais and flowers. Therefore, he collected a lot of precious species of orchids from everywhere to grow in the garden. The flowers make the house campus more lively, stunning, and refreshing. Especially, there is a well-known Mexican cactus that is over 40 years.
Apart from the orchid garden, the house interior keeps a lot of precious antiques such as a set of sofas from Yunnan, China, hundred –year – old pots, and cups from China. However, the most impressive antique is the white chandelier from France.

The unique architecture and cultural values make Binh Thuy Ancient House an ideal place for filming. Additionally, many popular Vietnamese movies used the house as the studio where ‘the Lover’ directed was filmed.
The film is an adaptation of the autobiographical novel by Marguerite Duras and directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud. It tells the inter-racial romance between Huynh Thuy Le – a son of a respectable Chinese family in Sa Dec, Dong Thap Province, and a French writer.

Binh Thuy Ancient House entrance fee and opening hours
If you only walk around, it is free. But if you go inside the house, you have to pay 15 000 VND/person for the manager of the house.
