Cai Rang Floating Market Cultural Festival 2019

Since the recognition as the National intangible cultural heritage in 2016, Cai Rang floating market has been the focus of interest and investment from the city government and local enterprises. Various activities have been implemented to honor the value of this special market, including the annual Cai Rang floating market cultural festival. The three-day festival in 2019 is the fourth time of occurrence, which consists nearly 20 activities to promote the image, culture and people of the floating market as well as celebrate the anniversary of Vietnam’s tourism sector (9th July 1960 – 9th July 2019).

Celebration of the floating market value

The festival activities were conducted mainly at the floating market and the Center of Cai Rang district tourism (17/2 Vo Tanh street, Cai Rang district, Can Tho city). With almost nearly 20 small activities in three days, from 06th to 08th July 2019, the festival was really a great chance for local people and tourists to understand and gain more respect to the cultural value of the floating market as well as other traditions of the Southern Vietnam.

Starting from the morning of 06th July, the festival was featured with spectacular opening ceremony full of performances of traditional music and songs, including Đờn ca tài tử (traditional music and song of Southern Vietnam recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage), dragon dancing…

Boat parade

From early morning, the boats from local authorities and enterprises, including tens of tourist boats, started the parade from Ninh Kieu Wharf to Cai Rang floating market. The activities showed increasing responsibility and commitment to the contribution to the preservation and promotion of the market’s cultural value from the city government and local enterprises.

Besides, there are other meaningful and attractive activities that can bring the visitors back to the space of traditional culture of the Southern Vietnam such as: quiz game, art exhibition shaped from local fruits and produce, photo exhibition, composite motor-boat racing, folk games, sporting events, demonstration of traditional handicrafts, calligraphy, selling local products…

In the morning of 7th July, a special event that could offer the visitors the truly original image of the floating market. Nearly 20 small boats gathered on the side of Cai Rang floating market, right at the pier of the Center of Cai Rang district tourism, which were full of local fruits, traditional cakes and sticky rice…

The activity started early in the morning.

The activity was funded by the contribution of nearly ten enterprises from Can Tho city, all of which work in the sector of tourism and hospitality. With the coordination of Mekong Smile Tour and 20 volunteers from Can Tho University, this event managed to make the image of original floating market reappear. Anyone visiting the event would have a chance to taste the local fruits and cakes free of charge. Consequently, it attracted many tourists to come to the Cai Rang floating market cultural festival and played as a check-in place. In addition, with the participation of students from Can Tho University, this activity has been a great opportunity for the young generation of the Mekong Delta to understand and gain more respect to the cultural value of the floating market.
